So, you want to purchase a handgun in the state of Maryland? The process might seem daunting at first, but it’s not so difficult with a little guidance. Let’s jump into it! Here is our checklist to help you navigate down the path toward pistol ownership.
Prohibitions
There are a few prohibitions when it comes to purchasing a regulated firearm in Maryland. Those with a history of violent behavior or a conviction of a disqualifying crime will not be allowed to purchase a pistol. If that doesn’t apply to you, you’re free to move forward with the rest of the steps!
HQL
Course
The first step on your path toward pistol ownership will be taking an HQL course. This four-hour course familiarizes students with firearm safety, handling, Maryland state firearm law, handgun parts and operation and basic maintenance of a firearm. At the end of the course, there is a brief firing session to put all of those new skills to the test.
Application
After you complete your HQL course, you’ll have to apply for your HQL. Sidenote: you will be required to submit fingerprints along with your application. To save yourself a trip to a third-party fingerprint scanning provider, you can take care of it after completing your HQL course with Security Training Academy.
To start your application, head over to the Maryland State Police registration site. Here, you’ll be able to fill in all relevant information and submit it. We’ll be sure to provide you with your LIVESCAN tracking number and license number to make the application process as easy as possible.
The state of Maryland has switched to providing HQLs digitally, so wait times are much better than they used to be. You can expect to receive an email with an electronic copy of your HQL in as little as a month after applying.
Making the Purchase
After you receive your HQL, you are fully authorized to go and purchase a pistol! Each time you want to purchase a regulated handgun, you’ll need to fill out this application. After your application has been submitted and your firearm is purchased, there is a 7-day waiting period for your application to go through, but once you receive an email notification that your application was “Not Disapproved,” congratulations! You’re all set to go pick up your new handgun.
